Breaking News of New Regime Change
As Told By Dasan Ahanu
by Dasan Ahanu

Poetry is taking over
I said poetry is taking over
There is a new way you’ll live your lives
A new way you’ll interact
A new understanding that everyone will have
When we’re all surrounded by words
There’ll be no more hatred for one another
No more concern about skin color, size, or weight
When we’re just metaphors and similes of one another
No worry about our leaders
No worry about their campaigns
They won’t be able to gain office without showing us
The sincerity of their words
Written by themselves
No more financial burden
Politicians will play on an even field
Families will exist in even classes
Poverty and affluence will be a thing of the past
Because no one can ever not have enough or have all words
There’ll be no more of this melting pot
They keep telling us about
Our country will be an essay
Where white is the paper, black is the ink
Yellow highlights the important words
Red corrects the mistakes
And brown is the trapper keeper that holds it all together
That’s my definition of homeland security

Poetry is taking over
I said poetry is taking over
Our communities will be stronger
They’ll be one long rhyme scheme
Where one house is aa
And the neighbor’s house is bb
And the whole community is one long poem
Women will no longer be degraded and devalued
No more worry about disrespect
Playboy will no longer have pictures
Just essays from women with beautiful minds
The sports illustrated swimsuit edition
Will just be short stories and sonnets using ocean metaphors
No more half-naked women in videos
Actually your favorite artists will be in videos
Dancing on notebook paper
With topless bics and papermates behind them
Relationships will be satisfying
Mainly because they’ll be full of conversation
Men will never run out of things to say
And women will always be understood
While being emotional will be accepted

Poetry is taking over
I said poetry is taking over
There will be no more terrorism
No need for blowing up buildings or cars
When foreign leaders can just sit down with us
And tell us how they don’t like how they’ve been treated
And it’s understood
No more worry of killing and suffering during war
If you hear any sounds of battle
It will just be onomatopoeia
Like Bang, Boom, Pow, Zoom
No more worry about media misconceptions
There will be no need for CNN or Headline News
Newspapers will be as thick and War and Peace
And show up on your doorstep everyday
Full of real insightful and well written interpretation
Debates will be prime time specials
And spelling bees will be as exciting as Venus and Serena playing tennis
Cell phones wouldn’t have speakers and mics
Just keyboards and bright screens

Poetry is taking over
I said poetry is taking over
RTP will be RWP
Real Writers Park
And Computer programmers will make minimum wage
And writers will make six figures
Radio would be fun to listen to again
As late night mix shows would be team slam pieces
And djs would spin Gil Scott, Ursula Rucker, Sarah Jones, and The Last Poets
Without a care for the FCC
Artists would have to put all the words to their songs in the linings
So that you could see the bs before you take it home
Commercials would be exciting
As athletes wouldn’t sweat colored fluids
But sweat letters, periods, and commas
And the Writoraid commercial would ask
Is it in you?
Can you see it
Can you picture it
Can you imagine how the world would be
If poetry took over
